Great Expectations
Charles Dickens
Suspenseful thriller, dark and mysterious
Great Expectations is a dramatic novel, in which characters are betrayed, shocked, heartbroken, and terrified. So many dramatic
things happen in this novel, to the point that this novel could be classified as
a tragedy. Pip, a young boy, lost his parents and lives with his cruel,
overbearing sister. The only real influence in Pip’s life is Mr. Joe, his
sister’s husband. It only takes one encounter to change Pip’s whole life
forever. In the grave yard Pip meets the prisoner and that is where it all
starts.
Dickens uses so much imagery and figurative language all throughout the
novel. Not to mention the many symbols representing what is to come. The
characters all meet their rises and falls. Pip goes receives a dramatic change
has a person. He goes from being the innocent child to a snobby rude young man.
He later changes his attitude and tries to fix all the damage he created.
Through the book he almost loses his relationship with Mr. Joe and spends his
whole life chasing after the one thing he can’t have, Estella.
This book appeals to so many different readers. Young people especially. It shows
the different things that happen in this world and the people in. It gives experiences
that people can relate to. It also is just entertaining. The comic scenes give the book
a funny edge when it is in it's darkest part. The book is so suspensful and frightening
it will give any reader a thrill.
Dickens portrays so many emotions, feelings and change of character. No
character stays the same. At some point in time each character has their
inspiration moment. They began to forgive, they began to appreciate, whether it
is Estella accepting Pip, or Miss Havisham realizing what she has done, Dickens
lets no character get away. And when I say “get away” I mean no character is
left unharmed, unscarred. All the characters get their fair share of abuse.
This book is not only what happens to Pip, more that it is showing what
happens in the world. It shows poverty, shame, social classes, respect, dignity,
love and the wanting to belong. Charles Dickens sums it all up in a 59 chapter
book. Charles Dickens creates a
suspenseful, dramatic book to show
us what the world is like.
I loved this book and would recommend it to any reader. this book appeals
to any reader. It keeps you on edge has to what is going to happen next and
it shocks you when something does. It's tragic, dramatic, suspenseful, dark, but
overall a very good book.
