Text"Mrs. Joe was a very clean housekeeper, but had an exquisite art of making her
cleanliness more uncomfortable and unacceptable than dirt itself." Chapter 4 "I was always treated as if I had insisted on being born, in opposition to the dictates of reason, religion, and morality, and against the dissuading arguments of my best friends." Chapter 4 "In a word, I was too cowardly to do what I knew to be right, as I had been too cowardly to avoid doing what I knew to be wrong." Chapter 6 "What would it signify to me, being coarse and common, if nobody had told me so!" Chapter 17 “It was horrible to think that I had provided the instrument, however undesignedly.” Chapter 16 “Home was never a pleasant place for me, because of my sister’s temper. But Joe had sanctified it.” “It was not because I was faithful, but because Joe was faithful.”Chapter 14 "Take nothing on its looks; take everything on evidence. There's no better rule." Chapter 40 | ThoughtsThis quote to me is describing not only the way Mrs. Joe presents heself, but her peronality. Her personality is somewhat abrupt and unwelcoming. To me if I was to go into her home she would make me feel uncomfortable and maybe less than herself.
I think Pip feels like it was a burden for him to have been born. The way people look upon him in a negative way sends a negative message to him. His sister's actions have alot to do with this. She is bruque and impolite towards him and I think this effects the way he thinks of himself. Pip knows right from wrong but like any kid he may not always act on it. He knows what he did was wrong but he feels as though he was too much of a coward not to do it, more or less he was too cowardly to do what was right as the quote states. Basically Pip never looked at himself as being average or regular or even below that. To me this descirbes his innocence and his perspective on the world. Pip feels guilty about his sister's death. Even though it wasn't fault he stills feels responsible for the death and it's clear in his words and feelings. This quote describes part of Pip's and Joe's relationship. It's clear that Joe only stays with Mrs. Joe to ease Pip's pain and that Joe feels bad for Pip and the hardship Pip has to deal with Mrs. Joe. I think Pip was only doing what is right to please Joe. Since Joe was so kind and thoughtful of Pip, I think this is Pip's way of repaying Joe for all that he is done in his childhood. This quote to me is describing the famous saying "don't judge a book by it's cover". That waiting to hear all the facts first is better than judging right away. |
