Text"It would have been cruel in Miss Havisham, horribly cruel, to practice on the susceptibility of a poor boy, and to torture me through all these years with a vain hope and an idle pursuit, if she had reflected on the gravity of what she did. But I think she did not." Chapter 44
"Pip, dear old chap, life is made of ever so many partings welded together." Chapter 27 "No man who was not a true gentleman at heart, ever was, since the world began, a true gentleman in manner... no varnish can hide the grain of the wood; and that the more varnish you put on, the more the grain will express itself." Chapter 22 "Now, I return to this young fellow. And the communication I have got to make is, that he has great expectations." Chapter 18 "...feeling it very sorrowful and strange that this first night of my bright fortunes should be the loneliest I had ever known." Chapter 18 "It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade." Chapter 54 "I wished Joe had been rather more genteelly brought up, and then I should have been so too" "I took the opportunity of being alone in the court-yard, to look at my coarse hands and my common boots." | ThoughtsThis quote, to me, shows that Pip does not think Miss Havisham understands how she has effected Pip and her influence on him. He also may not fully forgive her for her actions.
Here I think this is Joe's way of saying goodbye. This si Joe's last advice for Pip and a final departure. I think this quote is saying that anyone who was not originallly or is really a gentleman inside will not ever be a gentleman. That no matter how much you pretend to be you will not be a true one inside. Jagger says this to Pip and I think Jagger is seeing Pip growing up and maturing as Pip cares for others and finally growing up. This quote to me is saying that Pip is finally realizing that money isn't everything and that even if you have all the money in the world you can still find yourself to be lonely. That not all your friends are your real friends. I think their is a hidden meaning behind this text. I mean I do believe it was one of those day but I also believe that this text is foreshadowing what is to come. Pip always has looked up to Joe and followed his lead. Here I think Pip is focusing on what he doesnt have rather thann what he does have. Here is where Pip discovers self consciousness and is becoming aware of his appearance due to Estellas curt remarks about his appearance. |
