Text"For an hour or more, I remained too stunned to think; and it was not until I
began to think, that I began fully to know how wrecked I was, and how the ship in which I had sailed was gone to pieces" "You may be sure, dear Joe," I went on, after we had shaken hands, "that I shall never forget you." "As soon as I could recover myself sufficiently, I hurried out after him and looked for him in the neighboring streets; but he was gone. " "Look'ee here, Pip. I'm your second father. You're my son – more to me nor any son. I've put away money, only for you to spend." Herbert received me with open arms, and I had never felt before, so blessedly, what it is to have a friend. "Young as I was, I believe that I dated a new admiration of Joe from that night. We were equals afterwards, as we had been before; but, afterwards at quiet times when I sat looking at Joe and thinking about him, I had a new sensation of feeling conscious that I was looking up to Joe in my heart." "With which he took them out, and gave them, not to Miss Havisham, but to me. I am afraid I was ashamed of the dear good fellow – I know I was ashamed of him – when I saw that Estella stood at the back of Miss Havisham's chair, and that her eyes laughed mischievously." "Finally, I remember that when I got into my little bedroom I was truly wretched, and had a strong conviction on me that I should never like Joe's trade. I had liked it once, but once was not now." | ThoughtsPip always looked at the ships with Estella and sense of wealth in his mind. The ships represented a higher status to him. And I think now that he is finallly at that point, he finds it not as great as he expected it would be.
To me Pip is saying he is sorry for all the pain he has cause Joe. That he hasn't had the chance and is this is his way of saying goodbye. Pip is taken back by his encounter with Joe. I don't think Pip intended for their relationship to get to this degree. Thoug Pip's money gave him alot it will never get Joe back. To me Magwitch wants to be in Pip's life as his father. He cares for Pip and adopts Pip. He does this as a result of Pip's kindness in the graveyard, where they first met. Pip is discovering true friendship once again. I think he seems some of Joe in Herbert and this is what makes Pip so willingly to make another friend. Herbert is very kind and understanding to Pip and I think these are the qualities that Joe has that Pip sees in Herbert. This quote sums up Pip's and Joe's relationship to me. Pip looks up to Joe as a father figure and Joe returns with love. Joe is the only one who Pip can really turn to for advice and help and it shows alot in their relationship. I think this quote defines the two social classes greatly. Pip is almost embarassed by Joe as Pip can easliy fit in to both worlds. Here Pip's want for higher social class overcasts his love for Joe. Here Pip has had a taste of what wealth is and he does not want to go back home. He is embarassed at his home life and hates the world he loves in at home. |
